One of CBC Music’s 30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30 for 2016, Matthew Emery says he specializes in composing music for choirs because they’ve been part of his life since he was 10.
“I was singing in choir from grade five up till the fourth year of my undergraduate degree. I was singing every day, singing in choir is part of my identity,” he tells us via email. “I started composing because I wanted to write music that I wanted to sing. It was natural to focus all of my writing on the choral idiom. I think most composers, when they’re beginning their journey, start by writing for the instrument they are most familiar with. For me that was the choir.”

Denise Jung, Amabile Young Men’s Ensemble & Primus: Amabile Men’s Choir
Denise received her Bachelor and Master Degrees in music from the University of Western Ontario. She has a diploma in Chamber Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She is currently the music director at Calvary United Church and an occasional teacher with the TVDSB.
Hayoon Kim, Amabile Youth Singers & Prima: Amabile Women’s Choir
Hayoon Kim completed her Bachelor of Music, Artist Diploma in piano performance and her Bachelor of Education from Western University. She currently teaches at the elementary level for the Thames Valley District School Board. Hayoon shares her love of music by teaching private students, and accompanying at music festivals, examinations, and churches. She had the wonderful opportunity of touring Europe with Amabile Young Women’s Ensemble in the summer of 2016. Hayoon is grateful to be part of the Amabile family.
